TALENT IS JUST THE BEGINNING
There's a documentary on Amazon Prime called, "Hired Guns" about the amazing musicians who play behind the scenes of their more famous front acts.
I LOVE music so this documentary was really fascinating to me. But when it comes to my work and clients, I found this video clip of Rob Zombie to speak perfectly to the challenge of building ANY effective team (yes, horror-film-making, heavy-metal-playing Rob Zombie).
**This clip is only 38 seconds**
Of the many many talented musicians Rob could bring on the road (yes, we're on a first-name basis), he would only consider 2 or 3 people...because he knows his team (and life) will not be as good if he brings along the wrong people.
You may not be a rockstar and you may not be in a band, but the lesson from this clip should ring true to you as well.
Talent should be a prerequisite for who you hire...but if you want your team to perform at the highest level, culture better be of paramount importance.
The next time you're bringing people on your team, remember this: Don't stop with talent. You're always going to be able to find talented people (on LinkedIn, Indeed, in your network, wherever). Be willing to make culture and health a priority so that you can break through your current growth ceiling.
If you're not in a hiring role
Talent will only get you so far in life and in your career. Do the work to grow in self-awareness, invest in your strengths, and work to make others better. If you haven't explored these concepts...I'd encourage you to take a look at some of the books on my site. I have by no means arrived, but these books have been a guide pointing me in the right direction. Check out books here
